So… I wrote this a couple of days before new year and it must have not uploaded
So I am in Orlando spending time with my mother and brother, who I had not seen in MONTHS. It is good to spend time with family during the holidays isn’t it?! Last time I saw my mother was when she visited me in Ann Arbor for a week when I was studying for boards, that was in April, and the last time I saw the little guy, my brother Andres, was LAST Christmas break! Now, I am home, eating great home cooked meals, lots of Colombian food, spending time with my brother, seeing the town, traveling around Florida, going to concerts.. man what a life! And it’s great cause by this time, many of my friends have real world jobs and they are all sooo jealous of my three week break!! 🙂 And talking about friends. It is great to see them too!!! I actually started my break by traveling to LA to see some of my friends. One of which is, now YouTube sensation, Toby, you can watch his videos here (http://www.youtube.com/user/Tobuscus). We lived together for about 6 months back in undergrad at UF. We got super excited when he reached 5,000 subscribers, now he has over 1.5million! He is great and he continues to be the same friendly, funny, waaay to energetic guy I’ve always known. When in LA I also got to climb up to “the sign” where I realized I was the typical unprepared tourist.. Thinking I could drive up really close to the Hollywood sign and then hike for just a bit I put on jeans and casual shoes. Well… I had 1.5 mile hike each way from where the road ended and the hiking trail began. Almost to the top, a group of high school/undergrad young ladies asked me to take a picture of them.. and like the pro-photographer I believe that I am, I got down in one knee and took a few pictures… well I also ripped a nice hole in my jeans right below my left buttock. I still hope they didnt catch that.. :-/ haha, oh well. So.. I kept climbing and climbing.. and of course I reached the top of the mountain, I had a great view of the Valley, great view of Hollywood, but I also overshot the Hollywood Sign.. I was above it and I couldn’t see the letters.. thus, while I had a great view and took some nice pictures, deep inside I was pretty mad I was over the sign and not in front of it… so guess what the answer was.. more hiking with ripped jeans and shoes that were starting to get uncomfortable. Anyway, I finally got where I wanted to be and took the pictures I was there to take. Now it was the walk back down the mountain. Of course it was going to be the ‘easy’ part, I didn’t have to climb anymore, it was all downhill.. Well about halfway down the blisters in my toes started to pop and the pain got worse and worse.. and by the last quarter mile I was taking this half step, half jump strides, with a grimace that probably looked really odd to the people going up and down the trail. Again, I still hope that people didn’t catch that, at least not many. But at the end of the day, as I remember the hike and tell you the story and share some of the picture I took, I cant help but to smile and remember a great day. While in LA I also got to watch Conan, my favorite talk show host who I have been watching since high school, watch a comedy show at the Laugh Factory, walk up and down Hollywood blvd, and spend time with my friends Morgan, Toby, Jay, and more. Anyhow, this is getting a little long. Im going to go ahead and put up some pictures and call it a day.
So… it has been wayy to long since I posted something.. that should not be happening!
In the past couple of months a lot of things have happened and a good number of pictures have been taken. I finished family medicine some time ago and, as I mentioned in my last post, I really enjoyed it. Outpatient medicine is a ton of fun; you never know what you will find behind the exam room door. The chart says ‘med review’, or ‘bump on wrist’, or ‘health maintenance exam’, but once you open the door and sit down to talk to the ‘patient’ (more like the individual.. I think we say patient too much, and while they are patients they are also unique people with lives, families, jobs, personalities.. and not just a medical condition.. more on this topic another day) anyhow, you sit down to talk to this person and you learn a lot more than that piece of paper on your clipboard could ever tell you; I had two individuals, back to back, tell me that they were depressed at the very end of out meeting.. which of course became a much longer visit, a young girl who was being verbally abused by her step mother, and an aging woman with mild dementia who was being taken advantage off by her daughter.. who was also in the room!.. At the end of the day, there was much to learn from every visit and while I couldn’t do much for the synovial cyst on the young girls wrist, I was able to guide her to counseling and the doc wrote her a prescription for Celexa to treat her depression; probably the main reason she came in and not what was written on her chart – ‘bump on wrist’. So… that was family med and it was great. Now, I am on the last stretch of my two month pediatrics rotation.. and like family med.. I am having a great time. Come on, kids are awesome! If you don’t like peds there definitely something wrong with you, no matter what you want to do.
Ok, more on peds later. On to ‘las fotos’. You like how I just threw some Spanish in there, eh? you weren’t expecting that now, where you? So this pictures were taken over this summer around Ann Arbor. A couple were taken during the month long Ann Arbor Summer Festival aka Top of the Park. Learn more about this here – http://www.annarborsummerfestival.org/ .. It is an Ann Arbor tradition full of performing arts, fun events, concerts, night movies and more. Definitely worth checking out!. The rest of the photos are from a walk around town with a couple of my friends. Hopefully I will be able to give you a glimpse of the town with each post as I see it through my DSLR. Enjoy.. more pictures of this summer’s art fair and some black and whites next time we meet! Enjoy whats left of the summer!!
My name is Juan and this is my very first blog.. ever! Right now, I am in my second rotation of third year… Family Medicine. I absolutely love it. I am doing this rotation in Dexter, a nice little village partly in Scio and partly in Webster Townships. The staff is young, the faculty is energetic, and the atmosphere is great; there is soft music in the background ranging from oldies to top 40, there is always some snacks in the staff lounge for the taking, and the coffeepot is always full!!! Love it!
In the past few days I have been too lazy to pack my own lunch so I have explored some of Dexter’s food hotspots. Now… you, whoever you are, need to go to Foggy Bottom Coffee House! They have amazing paninis, sandwiches, wraps, etc. Seriously. Check. It. Out. The Dexter Bakery is also really good and its cheap. Ok… before this turns into a food review of Dexter restaurants lets move on (but I will definitely mention other places that are worth it in the future).
So, what do I do with my time when I am not in clinic or officially reviewing Dexter restaurants? Well.. after boards I didn’t go on a trip like most of my class. Instead, I decided to buy a DSLR camera. I have always liked photography but I never had the money to get an SLR camera and make this a more serious hobby. Finally, somehow, I managed to save some money to buy the camera this past May. I actually bought it in Dexter! I just love that town. Since then, I have tried to go out at least once a week to take pictures. Since I am on Family Med, I get to come home around 5pm and I have some time for myself before starting to study. Here you can see some of the pictures I took this week. I took these pictures all within half a mile of where I live, RiverHouse. To quote my friend: “you just took pictures of all the nice things behind your apartment, you need to go somewhere else next time”. He is also into photography and soon, when we go out to take pictures somewhere else, I will post those up too! This time you can see some shots of the river, the geese, and some other things right between my apartment and the hospital.
Anyway, I am about to go take a quick power nap. I hope you enjoyed the pictures… and food review.. Will continue to post soon!
